Light, camera, action – 15th annual international Small Cinemas Conference starts tommorrow

We’re just a few days away from the 15th annual international Small Cinemas Conference – Changing Policies, Transforming Audiences and Work Practices In-flux, which will take place from November 5 to 7 at the F22 Venue (Frankopanska 22), focusing on the latest challenges and opportunities in the film industry of small countries!

The first day, November 5, kicks off with a keynote from media industry expert Jakob Isak Nielsen, Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Journalism at Aarhus University, titled Four Avenues for Small Film Ecosystems. His talk analyzes seven small European film markets, highlighting four key strategies to address the challenge of limited domestic audiences. Later, at 11:30 a.m., you can join a roundtable on data-driven public policies for small film markets, featuring experts like Christopher Peter Marcich (HAVC, EFAD President), Krešimir Partl (Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media), and experts from CresCine project Ivana Kostovska from VUB, and Jakob Isak Nielsen from Aarhus University, who will discuss necessary strategic approaches.

On the second day, November 6, at 9:30 a.m., a panel on competitiveness in small film industries will feature leaders of key EU projects for audiovisual industry development—Reboot, SCENE, and CresCine—who will present their projects. Later that day, at 5:45 p.m., a panel on the challenges of independent cinema exhibitors in Croatia will bring together representatives of Kino Mreža, including Maja Holek (POU Koprivnica/Kino Velebit), Renata Kiršić Veselica (POU Labin/Kino Labin), Goran Plantak (POU Varaždin/Kino Gaj), and Alen Munitić (FMFS). This panel will be moderated by Martina Petrović (CED – MEDIA Office Croatia).

On the final day, November 7, at 9:30 a.m., we’ll hear a keynote from Petr Szczepanik from Charles University in Prague, titled Geography of the Streaming Economy: East-Central Europe as a Digital Periphery, offering a detailed look at the impact of global streaming services on markets in Eastern and Central Europe.

The conference will gather experts to discuss key topics like the effects of streaming services on production, distribution, and audience habits, as well as the sustainability of business models and cultural diversity in local industries. Prepare for three days of top insights and idea exchange on the future of the film industry in small countries!
